A Healthy Twist on Chips & Guac

Updated: Mar 27

Who can resist the classic combination of chips and guacamole? Certainly not me!

One of my all-time favorite food pairings is homemade sweet potato chips with fresh guac. It's a healthier alternative to over-processed corn or plain potato chips, loaded with nutrients instead of unnecessary additives and preservatives that can trigger inflammation.

My sister and I used to whip up this recipe almost every girls' night, and it's perfect for tailgates and gatherings. Plus, it strikes the perfect balance of sweet and salty, packed with vitamins and healthy fats—a win-win!

Let's talk about the star ingredients:

  • Avocados are a fantastic source of monounsaturated fats, potassium, and fiber. They're also rich in nutrients that are fat-soluble, aiding in their absorption. Avocados may even lower the risk of depression and help prevent neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

  • Coconut oil is an excellent choice for cooking due to its high stability at high temperatures. It's been linked to increased metabolism, blood sugar regulation, improved cognitive function, and immune support.

  • Sweet potatoes are fiber-rich and packed with vitamins A and C. They're also loaded with antioxidants, support healthy vision, and have anti-inflammatory and cancer-fighting properties.

Now, let's get to the recipe:

Ingredients:

For Sweet Potato Chips:

  • 1-2 sweet potatoes

  • Coconut oil

  • Pink Himalayan salt

  • Garlic powder

For Guacamole:

  • 3 avocados

  • 1/2 tomato

  • 1/2 white onion

  • 1 1/2 limes

  • 1 jalapeño

  • Pink Himalayan salt

Instructions:

For Sweet Potato Chips:

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F.

  2. Melt coconut oil in a bowl.

  3. Slice sweet potatoes thinly (a mandolin works best).

  4. Lay the potato slices flat on a parchment-lined baking sheet (ensure they don't overlap).

  5. Brush sweet potato slices with coconut oil.

  6. Sprinkle with salt and garlic powder.

  7. Cook for about 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through and reapplying coconut oil, garlic powder, and salt.

For Guacamole:

  1. Remove the skins and seeds of the avocados.

  2. Juice the limes.

  3. Mash the avocados in a bowl with lime juice and salt to taste.

  4. Chop tomato, onion, and jalapeño, then mix them into the avocados.

Now grab a chip and when I dip, you dip, we dip!

Enjoy!
